Training

The Striders provide many opportunities to train with other runners in the greater Des Moines area.

Training runs are administrated by the Capital Striders and usually a sponsor. They have a scheduled training program in place and have course support which includes water and perhaps replacement fluids and energy gel.

Monday Beginning Runner’s Group
6:00 p.m. Mondays (beginning late March/early April) at the gazebo in Campbell Park in Clive.

Saturday Winter/Spring Training Group
Co-sponsored by Capital Striders and Fitness Sports, this group leaves Drake’s Meredith Hall every Saturday morning (early-January through Dam to Dam) promptly at 8:00 a.m. (7:30 a.m. starting March 1). New runners will find this a great way to work into distance running. If you want to step up your mileage, there’s no easier way than successfully completing long runs with friends.

Starting June and running to October these runs are great if you’re preparing for a fall marathon, a shorter race, or just want some company on those long, hot, summer runs.

Group Runs
These runs have been organized by Strider members and are also a great way to get to know other runners in the community. These are more informal get togethers.

Saturday “There isn’t a Training Group, now what?” Run
When there isn’t a formal Training Group meeting (see above), we still try to meet most Saturday mornings for a run. While these don’t have the same level of course support as the Training Groups, they are still a lot of fun and a great way to keep your running routine going.

Thursday Knoxville Run
6:00 p.m. at the gazebo at Young’s Park on the VA Hospital grounds. April 6 through October. Runners of all ages and abilities are encouraged to attend.

Thursday Zimm’s Run
Leave at 6:15 p.m. from Zimm’s Food and Spirits at 3124 Ingersoll. About a 6-mile loop on Grand and Ingersoll.

Sunday Greenbelt Run
Meet 8:00 a.m. at the east trail head of the Clive Trail on 86th Street (behind the Grease Monkey). About 10 miles out and back. Pace is 6:30- to 8:15-minute miles. The group nearly always adjourns to the nearby Bruegger’s on 86th (north of University) for an hour or so of socializing.

Saturday Valley Run
8:30 a.m. in the Dahl’s parking lot on Grand Avenue in West Des Moines. Three to seven mile runs. After the run, adjourn to the Dahl’s cafeteria for breakfast and conversation. The group has met for 20 years and welcomes new runners.
